Finally Got 'Ms Drobo' Up and Running
Categories: Installation & Setup
I finally received it from stateside, and since this site is suppose to be for Drobo users I wanted to post something positive about my first experience with Drobo to remind you of why we purchased the Drobo in the first place.
I love everything about it so far. The set-up was pretty simple.
I wish I could say flawless, but there were a few minor hiccups that were resolved with basic tech common sense.
For one, after I transfered 40 GB to my Drobo, I ejected the other EXHD. I went back to look for the Drobo icon to open it and it was gone. I could see that Drobo Dashboard was reading it, but I had no access to it.
I just disconnected it and reconnected it and it was back.
Then after I have transfered about about a total of 67 GB, (this is my test amount, in a month or so I will get rid of the other EXHD's and transfer a few more hundred GB) I hooked it up to the Droboshare.
There was a firmware update and Drobo dashboard read the Drobo was connected, but then the icon issue came up again.
I could not get to Drobo, only the dashboard could, so I put it in standby. (Let it be know there is no way to bring it back out of standby via Drobo dashboard so I had to go and unplug and replug it. (This would be good in a updgraded firmware)
Anyhow when I pluged it back and turned it back on "BAM!" Drobo showed up on my computer via Droboshare under shared in my finder.
Simple as that. Now that the set up is all done, what else is there to do, this toy is pretty boring.
So far I love it.
Plus Korea sells HDD for cheap. I got my WD 500 GB (Green Power) for roughly $88 dollars a piece.
On a another note:
The transfer speed was not bad at all via USB2. About 36 min for 40 GB.
Transfering over Droboshare was really slow. It took about 10 min to transfer about 1GB.
I do not blame Drobo or Droboshare. I do not have wireless N on my Macbook and I do not have a wireless N router nor do I have a 1GHZ wireless router.
So I expect the transfer speed to be faster when I get a Time Capsule (Whenever this Netgear goes out... hurry up and die why don't you! LOL). I would of purchased the Airport Extreme already, but Korea is one of those countries that would not allowed the Wiereless N Router to be sold due to the ieee laws. Time Capsule is sold because it is advertised as not only a wireless router, but storage also and so it slips by.
Anyway this is just me sharing my Drobo experience with the rest of the Drobo user community.
