Drobo Price Reduced to $499, Gives Difference Back to Previous Buyers

Data Robotics today announced an immediate suggested retail price drop on their Drobo data storage robot from the initial launch price of $699 to $499. Given the high interest and initial sales for the Drobo, the company is ramping up production and realizing the cost savings much sooner than anticipated.

What's most exciting is that Data Robotics isn't leaving the early adopters wishing they waited for the price drop.

"We feel the best thing to do is pass those savings on to our customers who made this possible." said Peter Radsliff, VP of Marketing for Data Robotics in an e-mail to DroboSpace. "Therefore, effective immediately, Drobo storage robots offered through the friends & family pre-launch program will be at $499. Anyone who purchased a Drobo storage robot at a price above $499 will be rebated a check for the difference."

The rebate amounts will also include pro-rata difference for sales tax if applicable.

According to the company, current Drobo purchasers will not need to contact the company for rebates. Data Robotics has informed us that all customers that have purchased a Drobo will be contacted by e-mail or telephone in the near future regarding their rebate.

Price drops on consumer technologies, particularly in the computer and storage industry, are common as products mature. From this editor's perspective, I give kudos to their approach. How many companies have ever given a dime back the early adopters that purchases new technologies at the always higher launch price? I'll tell you... few.

If anyone liked their Drobo at $699, it's safe to say they'll love their Drobo at $499.

"We want to thank this enthusiastic community who have embraced Drobo and made this possible," says Peter.

I would like to thank Data Robotics for being a class act in regards to the price change and previous orders of their first product. Having just received my new unit a few days ago and having it setup with two 320GB hard drives its humming along just fine serving up music and video to my Apple TV and other systems at my house. Having a code that took the price down to $499 changed the product from a cool idea to a must have. Ripping over 1000 CD's again would suck if I lost my music storage drive, Drobo gives that added protection that is missing in computer systems for home users. Hearing that the price is now $499 made me think oh well so much for the discount code I used to save money but maybe more users will give this product a chance. Last night when I got home from work Data Robotics called and thanked me for my early adoption of their product and let me know that they would be sending me a check for $50 as a refund on my purchase. Thanks Again. Steve Murphy

Well, this is the kind of news everybody likes to hear. I will watch my mailbox and/or hope for such a phone call. So, thanks in advance, Drobo people! Even though I have received my Drobo, I haven't begun to use it. It warned me that even with the one 750GB HD I ordered with it, it still needs at least one more drive to be protected. I didn't realize that my old HD (IDE) would be useless for this purpose until I read through the user manual. So now I'm waiting for another pair of drives to arrive so I can install and really try it out. I want to move stuff off my 40GB hard drive to speed things up. It's nearly full and I have a ton of photos on external hard drives. I guess I'll be able to plug in an external hard drive to my PC and move it through the PC onto the Drobo, but what happens when I unplug the external HD to plug in another one to be copied to Drobo? I am wondering.??

I just unwrapped a Drobo 1 and went to register it and learned that the Drobo 2 was just released. From the time I ordered it to when I received it, the new one was released! I wrote DRI to see what could be done. At least I hope to get a difference in price since they dropped the D1 price. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Craig

when do we get these $200 checks? I've been waiting for them so I can buy the Firewire Version in addition to the USB version I just bought.

Thanks
