Drobo icons for Mac and PC

CALLING ALL DROBO OWNERS

Announcing the brand spanking new Drobo desktop icons for Mac and PC! We've created icons so you can replace the generic USB device icon on your desktop and within windows with a genuine little image of the front of your Drobo.

Not only will this help you not inadvertently confuse Drobo with any other attached storage devices, it also looks really cool!

Plus, this Drobospace blog is the one and ONLY place that you can get these icons. Just click on one of the links below to download the Mac or PC icon.

Download Drobo icon for PC

Download Drobo icon for Vista

Download Drobo icon for MAC (.zip file)

Download Drobo icon for MAC (.sit file)

Changing icons on the Mac is easy. After downloading the file, select it and choose "Get Info". Then select the small icon in the upper left corner and choose "Copy" from the "Edit" menu. Next, select the generic USB icon that represents your Drobo on the desktop and choose "Get Info" again. Then select its icon in the top left corner, and choose "Paste" from the Edit menu. Et Voila, Drobo will now appear on your desktop looking as it should.

I'll post instructions for PC at a later time.

Enjoy.

Anyone else see the PC format of the Drobo icon as dithered in Vista?  My display is set to 32-bit color, and the other icons look glorious.  But the Drobo icon looks nothing like the quality of the Mac screenshot -- much more like a 16-color dithered icon from Windows 3.1 days.

Is it just me or does the mac zip file have zero length files?

I've sent the editor some additional icons to post to drobospace.  Hopefully these will show up better.

I'm going to go ahead and post instructions on how to add the Drobo icon to Windows XP computers. The instructions below will replace the generic drive icon in the My Computer area and other places on any XP computer you use.

Instructions for adding the Drobo icon to Windows XP:

Download the Windows PC icon, and unzip the file. (click read full item at the top of the page for the link)

Copy the icon file to somewhere on your Drobo, just remember where you put it. It's easiest if you put the icon file on the root of the drobo.

Open Windows Notepad, and type the following two lines:

[autorun]
icon=filename

Where you see filename, add the full path to the icon filename.

If the icon file is at the root of the drive, it should look like this:

[autorun]
icon=/drobopc.ico

Save the text file, then rename it to "autorun.inf", and copy it to the root of the Drobo. Disconnect the Drobo, and reconnect it. Let Autoplay do its thing.

Click "My Computer" and you'll see your new icon.

Datguy is correct that in thumbnail and tile views, the icon looks dithered (something that I didn't notice right away since I'm in icon view all the time). If you click View at the top, then icons, it will look really nice. Hopefully the fine folks over at Data Robotics can provide some insight, better instructions, or a new icon package to clear it up when in Thumbnail or Tile view.

Correction, the .sit file worked once I installed Stuffit Expander. The zip had an empty file, but the sit had the right one. Nice job. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the icon. I'm impatiently waiting for the UPS guy to deliver my drobo today, so I'll apply the icon in a few hours (hopefully!).

Note: the .zip file for OS X still contains a zero data file (and since new Macs don't include StuffIt by default, it's probably the most common download)... [Apologies for the double post].

I'll look into to getting a ZIP version of the Mac icons as soon as I can. I don't have anything to open the StuffIt file with to convert it to zip. Hopefully there'll be something up soon.

The ZIP download for MAC has been replaced. There should actually be something in it now. :-)

Any way to fix the dock icon after 1.1.2 update?

June 3, 2008 8:48 PM

Thank you so much for the icons! Any change of getting a 256x256 icon for Vista so that switching to "Extra Large Icons" causes the icon to scale properly?
