Many electronics companies have made expanding the features and abilities of products long after they've left the factory a common practice. In many cases, these updates and enhancements have been free those who own the product. 

Unfortunately, due to strict accounting rules that govern a hardware manufacturer’s ability to provide feature or functionality enhancements, it is not possible to offer free software feature enhancements beyond the initial warranty period. Bug fixes and updates to correct defects not included here (you get those regardless); these rules seem to only apply to updates that add abilities or features that weren't originally there.
